East Brown Cow is honored to announce that The Docent’s Collection, a hallmark of Portland’s Old Port, has been nominated for Travel + Leisure’s 2025 World’s Best Awards. This esteemed recognition celebrates destinations and experiences that inspire and leave a lasting impression on travelers worldwide.

Nestled in Portland’s historic Old Port district, The Docent’s Collection has redefined the concept of travel accommodations, offering thoughtfully curated private lofts designed to directly connect guests to the area’s rich history, culture, and charm.

“The Old Port continues to captivate visitors with its unique blend of nationally recognized and locally owned retail, exceptional dining, and exquisite culture,” said Tim Soley, President and CEO of East Brown Cow. “The Docent’s Collection allows guests to experience this remarkable community in an entirely new way—immersed in the charm of the Old Port while enjoying the comforts of a thoughtfully curated stay.”

As travel preferences shift toward meaningful, experiential moments, The Docent’s Collection has become a standout in the hospitality industry. Key research studies, including a 2023 report by booking.com, found 75% of respondents wanted, “authentic experiences that are representative of the local culture.” With Millennials and Gen Z leading the charge, travelers want to feel part of the local scene and want to know that money they spend will support the local community. The Docent's Collection meets this demand by weaving together the Old Port’s renowned arts district, local craftsmanship, and historic character into every loft.

Launched in 2019 and rebranded in 2022, The Docent’s Collection has since expanded to include two distinct buildings: the Thompson Block (121 Middle Street) and the A. Robinson Block (115 Middle Street). Meticulously restored lofts on the top floor of the Thompson Block, converted from former office space, feature fully equipped kitchens, spacious living areas, and bespoke furnishings. Guests are welcomed with a seamless mobile check-in process and the tailored guidance of a personal “docent,” offering an unparalleled connection to the Old Port. Thoughtfully curated details celebrate Portland’s artistry and craftsmanship, including handmade Thos. Moser furniture, work by local artist Tanja Hollander, and coffee from Coffee by Design.

Upcoming plans for The Docent’s Collection include further expansion along Middle Street, with construction underway at 178 Middle Street and 184 Middle Street. The upper floors of these 19th century buildings, known respectively as the Boyd Block and the William Widgery Thomas Block, are being converted into 19 additional one- and two-bedroom lofts, set to join the collection in 2025.

Voting for the Travel + Leisure 2025 World’s Best Awards is open until February 25, 2025. Join us in sharing the spirit of the Old Port with travelers everywhere. Cast your vote for The Docent’s Collection here.
